2020 CORONA in Ambalafenomby

The school calendar in Madagascar has been overturned by the appearance of the CORONA virus.

The measures taken by the government have proved more intrusive than the annual waves of plague. There were no regular classes from the end of February to the end of April.

It was not until April 28th, 2020, that the students in class CM2, who are taking their final exams this year, started regular classes again.

The threat of COVID-19 has been downplayed for many weeks. The President of the Republic personally announced the successful development of a drug by Malagasy scientists from IMRA (Institute for Applied Research) based on the native plant Artemisia and other Malagasy plants. This herbal tea, dubbed "COVID Organics," is said to prevent and cure the disease.

Despite the offered miracle cure COVID-Organics, the school management adhered to the basic rules to avoid infections when resuming full school operations: the buildings were disinfected, everyone wears face protection (although not medical, but self-made masks from cloth remnants), and the minimum distance is observed by teaching in subgroups.

As everywhere in Madagascar, the exam results for the CEPE final exam, which is uniform throughout the country, were worse than in previous years due to the cancellation of classes.

The success rate of 7 out of 8 was far better than the national average, but the number of registered candidates was very small.

Since it was not possible for us to travel to Madagascar ourselves at the start of the new school year due to the travel ban in the pandemic, we commissioned a nephew who lives in Madagascar. All school uniforms had to be renewed every two years and the teaching and learning materials for the new school year had to be handed over. LiquiMoly, through company boss Ernst Prost, had again promised to sponsor the costs of the school uniforms.

Although the supply situation was very tight, our on-site team, Isabelle and René, were able to ensure the functionality of the canteen throughout the year.

The dramatic famine - especially in the south of the country - has also reached the Fianarantsoa region, slightly alleviated.
